The security operations targeting Anita Among have rapidly evolved into one of the most dramatic political developments in Uganda’s recent history, reflecting a combination of elite power struggles, anti-corruption pressure, internal ruling-party realignment, and mounting scrutiny over wealth accumulation.
What initially began as a heavily guarded security search at Among’s upscale residence in Nakasero expanded within hours into a much broader operation involving her other properties in Ntinda and Kigo.
Reports indicate that joint teams made up of Criminal Investigations Directorate officers, military personnel, intelligence operatives, and plainclothes security agents sealed off several premises connected to the outgoing Speaker.
The operations reportedly involved strict access control, extensive searches, and prolonged deployment of armed personnel around the homes.
The Kigo property, described as a large luxury lakeside mansion in Wakiso District, quickly became a focal point of public attention after images and videos circulated online showing the estate under heavy security surveillance.
Observers noted the unusually intense nature of the deployment, with reports suggesting that investigators were conducting detailed searches linked to allegations of illicit enrichment, money laundering, and undeclared assets.
The raids did not occur in isolation.
They came amid escalating political pressure surrounding Among’s future as Speaker of Parliament.
Earlier reports had indicated that a high-level State House meeting chaired by Yoweri Museveni discussed concerns regarding the speakership race, allegations of excessive wealth accumulation, and political optics ahead of the formation of the 12th Parliament.
According to accounts emerging from that meeting, Museveni reportedly informed Among that auditors would be sent to examine issues surrounding her wealth and conduct.
The investigations also appear connected to increasing domestic and international scrutiny over Among’s finances.
Public debate intensified after reports emerged that she had imported a 2025 model Rolls-Royce Cullinan allegedly valued at more than Shs3 billion.
The acquisition triggered a storm of criticism on social media and in political circles, with many Ugandans questioning the source of the funds used to purchase such an expensive vehicle.
The controversy deepened further after Muhoozi Kainerugaba publicly made remarks questioning the extravagance associated with the vehicle and the broader issue of lavish lifestyles among political leaders.
His comments were widely interpreted as signaling growing hostility toward Among from influential power centers within the ruling establishment.
Shortly afterward, the Patriotic League of Uganda, a pressure group linked to Muhoozi, withdrew its earlier endorsement of Among for the Speakership race and shifted support toward waiting for Museveni’s preferred candidate.
At the same time, pressure on Among intensified institutionally.
Uganda’s Inspectorate of Government confirmed receiving formal petitions from lawyers and activists requesting investigations into alleged breaches of the Leadership Code Act, possible illicit enrichment, and unexplained assets linked to the outgoing Speaker.
These petitions appear to have contributed to the widening atmosphere of official scrutiny.
Politically, analysts view the raids as more than ordinary law-enforcement activity.
Many see them as evidence of a broader internal recalibration inside the ruling National Resistance Movement, where alliances, loyalties, and succession positioning are increasingly shaping political outcomes behind the scenes.
The speed with which support for Among appears to have collapsed among powerful factions has shocked many observers because she was until recently regarded as one of the most politically secure figures within the ruling establishment.
The operations have also expanded attention toward individuals closely associated with Among, including allies in politics, business, and sports administration.
Public discussion intensified around her husband, Moses Magogo, with commentators questioning whether broader investigations could extend into networks surrounding the outgoing Speaker.
So far, neither Among nor her legal team has publicly admitted wrongdoing.
Supporters argue that the operations are politically motivated and linked to internal power struggles ahead of parliamentary leadership changes.
Critics, however, argue that the raids reflect long-overdue accountability measures against high-level corruption and unexplained wealth accumulation within Uganda’s political elite.
The raids on the Ntinda, Kigo, and Nakasero homes symbolize a dramatic turning point in Uganda’s political atmosphere.
What was once seen as untouchable political authority around Anita Among has now transformed into a public crisis involving investigations, elite rivalry, anti-corruption narratives, security operations, and intense speculation over the future balance of power within the Ugandan state.
