It became the primary site of the Holocaust, where the SS murdered over 1.1 million people—mostly Jews—through forced labor, starvation, medical experiments, and mass gas chambers. The SS (Schutzstaffel) was a major paramilitary organization under Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party. Led by Heinrich Himmler, it grew from a small bodyguard unit into a massive state agency responsible for police power, state security, racial policies, and managing concentration camps.
