Spirit Possession

THPs (Traditional Health Practitioners) are community-based healers who use indigenous knowledge, spiritual beliefs, and local herbs to treat physical, mental, and spiritual illnesses, often serving as a primary source of healthcare in African cultures.

THPs view spirit possession through three lenses: ancestral callings (demanding a cultural role), spiritual illness (causing distress), and malicious witchcraft/demons. Treatment aims to restore communal harmony, cure the person, or appease the ancestor.

Spirit possession as a concept that the spirit impersonates or possesses human being in which a person’s behaviour is thought to be controlled by a humanlike being that has entered a person’s body.

When a person rejects their calling from their ancestors, the ancestors visit the person, who then presents unfamiliar behavior like talking, laughing, crying, outbursts, anger, and dancing alone. Some spirit-possessed persons experience dreams or visions that are frightening.

Traditional health practitioners understand witchcraft as the practice of evil acts wherein witches inflict a person with an evil spirit that ruins that person’s life. This infliction of the evil spirit comes from family members.

Traditional health practitioners understand and describe spirit possession as a spiritual illness, a spiritual calling, or the result of witchcraft. It is viewed as a supernatural phenomenon or illness where an external entity—such as a spirit, demon, extraterrestrial being, or divine presence—takes control of an individual.

This possession results in distinct, noticeable changes in the person's physical health, behavioral patterns, or overall appearance. Additionally, a person is considered spirit-possessed when they are occupied by an ancestral spirit that utilizes them as a direct channel of communication between the living world and the dead.

Traditional health practitioners understand spirit possession as a spiritual illness or ancestral illness that is attributable to supernatural forces such as ancestral spirits, harmless household spirits, wild forest spirits, malevolent spirits, and shaman spirits. The severity of the illness depends on the number of spirits that possess a person.

The person with spiritual illness behaves in a mentally deranged way and sometimes presents psychotic features fuelled by the spirits associated with witches and sorcerers. Some persons with spiritual illness experience traumatic dreams while others experience tremors, voices, visions, and so on.

The person becomes stressed, angry and/or isolated and ultimately ends up in a mental healthcare institution because of unresolved spiritual illness. The spirit-possessed person likely feels worthless, loses hope and develops suicidal ideas that are also regarded as signs of mental illness.

Traditional views define spirit possession as an indigenous spiritual illness that is deeply connected to cultural beliefs and supernatural factors, which often cause severe mental and intellectual ill-health.

This condition manifests through a distressing combination of physical, emotional, and psychological struggles—including traumatic dreams, tremors, voices, and intense isolation—that ultimately damages the soul and produces profound frustration in a person's life.

Because Western medical methods cannot detect or interpret this spiritual state, mainstream medicine usually mislabels the spirit-possessed individual as simply suffering from a standard mental illness or an unidentifiable physical ailment.

Literally, figuratively, and metaphorically.
