Schindler's List is a masterpiece directed by Steven Spielberg. It tells the true story of Oskar Schindler, a vain and greedy German businessman who arrives in occupied Poland to profit from World War II. After witnessing the horrific horrors of the Holocaust and the Nazi persecution of Jewish people, his motives change. He spends his entire personal fortune to buy and protect Jewish workers, successfully saving more than 1,100 lives from the death camps.
Inception is a mind-bending sci-fi thriller directed by Christopher Nolan. It stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Dom Cobb, a thief who steals corporate secrets by entering people's dreams. Instead of stealing an idea, he is given the near-impossible task of inception—planting an idea into a target’s subconscious. To do this, Cobb and his team build a complex, multi-layered "dream within a dream" structure, where hours feel like years and reality completely blurs.
Léon: The Professional is a gripping thriller directed by Luc Besson. It follows Léon, a quiet, solitary hitman living in New York City. His life changes completely when his twelve-year-old neighbor, Mathilda, becomes the sole survivor after corrupt DEA agents—led by the psychotic Norman Stansfield—murder her family. To save her life, Léon reluctantly takes her in. Mathilda becomes his apprentice, learning his deadly trade as they build an unusual bond and plot revenge.
The Pianist is a biographical drama directed by Roman Polanski. It tells the true story of Władysław Szpilman, a brilliant Polish-Jewish radio station pianist living in Warsaw. When World War II begins, his life is shattered as Nazi forces invade and force his family into the brutal Warsaw Ghetto. After narrowly escaping deportation to a death camp, Szpilman hides in the ruins of the city, enduring extreme hunger and isolation while fighting to survive the war.
Django Unchained is a stylized, western drama directed by Quentin Tarantino. Set in the American South before the Civil War, it follows Django, an enslaved man who is freed by an eccentric German bounty hunter, Dr. King Schultz. The two form an unlikely partnership, hunting down dangerous criminals together. In exchange, Schultz promises to help Django rescue his long-lost wife, Broomhilda, from Calvin Candie, the brutal and charismatic owner of a notorious Mississippi plantation.
Parasite is a brilliant, genre-bending thriller directed by Bong Joon Ho. It follows the destitute Kim family, who slowly con their way into working for the ultra-wealthy Park family by pretending to be highly qualified, unrelated luxury domestic professionals. As their web of lies smoothly takes hold, they integrate themselves deeply into the Parks' lavish lifestyle. However, an unexpected, dark secret hidden deep beneath the luxury home surfaces, triggering an explosive class war.
Inglourious Basterds is an alternate-history war film directed by Quentin Tarantino. Set in Nazi-occupied France during World War II, it weaves two parallel plots to assassinate Germany's top leadership. One path follows a vengeful Jewish cinema owner whose family was slaughtered by the ruthless Colonel Hans Landa. The other follows the "Basterds," a fierce band of Jewish-American soldiers led by Lt. Aldo Raine, who spread terror through the Third Reich by hunting and scalping Nazis.
Sisu is a unique Finnish word representing extraordinary determination, grit, and stubborn courage in the face of extreme adversity. It means pushing forward when all hope seems lost. This cultural concept inspired the violent 2022 action film Sisu. The movie follows a legendary, silent ex-soldier in 1944 Finland who discovers gold in the wilderness. When a brutal platoon of retreating Nazis tries to steal it, his unstoppable 'sisu' turns him into a one-man army.
Oldboy is a legendary psychological thriller directed by Park Chan-wook. It follows Oh Dae-su, an ordinary man who is inexplicably kidnapped and locked in a sealed hotel room for fifteen years. Suddenly released without explanation, he is given just five days by his mysterious captor to figure out why he was imprisoned. Armed with a hammer and a thirst for vengeance, Dae-su tears through the Korean underworld, leading to a shocking, deeply devastating climax.
Green Book is a biographical comedy-drama directed by Peter Farrelly. Set in 1962, it follows Tony Lip, a rough Italian-American bouncer from the Bronx who is hired as a driver and bodyguard for Dr. Don Shirley, a world-class Black classical pianist. As they tour the deeply segregated American Deep South, they rely on a historic travel guide for African Americans to navigate racism and find safe havens, forging an unlikely, lifelong friendship.
Oppenheimer is a monumental biographical drama directed by Christopher Nolan. The film chronicles the life of theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, who led the Manhattan Project to develop the world's first nuclear weapons during World War II. It explores the thrilling scientific race against Nazi Germany, the historic Trinity test explosion, and the severe political and psychological fallout Oppenheimer faced during a hostile 1954 security clearance hearing.
Literally, figuratively, and metaphorically.
